The pride of every Malayali reawakens during the Onam season. The festival season begins in the month of Chingam and lasts for 10 days. Starting with Atham and ending with Ponnonam, the festival celebrates the harvest season of Kerala with vibrant flowers, festive sadhya, and competitive boat racing. Onam celebrates King Mahabali, who was a benevolent ruler whose reign is celebrated for its prosperity and harmony. The devas were not pleased by seeing his reign and begged Lord Vishnu to intervene.
Lord Vishnu appeared before Mahabali in his Vamana Avatar (a young Brahmin avatar). Mahabali asked him what he desired, and the boy responded he wanted land equal to three of his steps.
Mahabali granted Vamana’s wish. That is when Vamana grew in size and stepped over the entire universe in just two steps. Realising Vamana’s true identity, Mahabali offered his own head for his third step.
Pleased with his devotion, Lord Vishnu sent Mahabali to Pathala (netherworld), where he was allowed to live in peace. He was also granted permission to visit Kerala once a year to see his devoted subjects.
Every year since then, the people of Kerala have prepared their homeland for Mahabali’s return during Chingam. The Onam season is seen as a new beginning for Mahabali’s subjects, ushered in with high-voltage festivities, songs, and dances.

There are a variety of characters that are ever-present during Onam festivities. Onam is known for its emphasis on traditional music and dance. Chenda Melam (Percussion Ensemble), Thiruvathira Kali (a dance form), and Pulikali (a folk artform) are epic representations of Kerala’s music and artistic dance forms.
Before Onam sadhya is served on the final day of Onam, all three iconic centrepieces of Onam—chenda melam, thiruvathira kali, and pulikali—take place all over the state with high intensity and revelry. People come out in droves to witness and participate in the music and dance of the festival.
