Backstory

Just like the clear skies on a sunny day, a toddy shop in Kerala carries a charm that’s impossible to ignore. Marked only by a modest signboard that says “Kallu”, these humble spots need no fancy directions — they draw people in by sheer familiarity and flavor.

Often tucked beside green paddy fields or nestled along quiet backwaters, they come alive with chatter, laughter, the hiss of pressure cookers, and the hum of nostalgic Malayalam tunes. Servers move through the crowd with large clay pots of freshly tapped toddy, pairing them with irresistible dishes — spicy seafood, slow-cooked meats, and the beloved combo of kappa and fish curry.
